Welcome to another amazing year fellow WSAND members! We have already had two great pro-gramming events and have many more to come. Thank you to the Board Members and Program-ming Committee for helping us put together a fan-tastic year of speakers and events!
In September we had our first kick-off meeting and decided to change things up by incorporating wine tasting into our typical learn-ing activities. Ali Baig, a good friend of mine, and fellow RD taught us about the process of home wine making, while reviewing nutritional benefits of wine with us. We were able to taste and enjoy some of the wines that he makes, as well as learn about food pairings. Awards from the past year were also given, and we were able to honor some of our core members who have contributed to this or-ganization over the past years. It was the perfect fun event to kick off the year!
Our second meeting took place in November at Benedictine Universi-ty. We were able to learn in depth about Public Policy and Second Century (which will be discussed further in this newsletter). We also had our past WSAND President, Cheryl Reining, MS, RD, LDN, and new member Andrea Custer, RDN present a cooking demonstration that taught us about some creative ways to incorporate spices into recipes.
These two programs were just the beginning! We have many exciting events still to come over the next year including a webinar on the ketogenic diet, a lecture on Food Sensitivities and Feeding Challenges in the Older Adult, a National Nutrition Month activity at a local volunteer organization called the Sunny Patch Garden Project, and an end of the year awards dinner with an exciting speaker who has been featured on FOX 32 Chicago.
I hope some of you will consider getting involved in WSAND next year! We will be looking for a President-elect, Treasurer, Nominating Committee Chair, and Legislative Chair. Filling any of these positions is a great way to gain leadership experience and network with your dietitian colleagues!
Thank you to everyone that has helped make this year amazing! A special thank to our new president-elect Emily Rohan, who really stepped up and volunteered to take on this important position. Also a special thank you to Sue Rainey who has helped mentor all of the new board members and made them feel comfortable taking on their positions and making our WSAND board strong!
